Sense of Taste

This week we did our last science experiment for our five senses - sense of taste. The kindergartners learned that even though we say our mouth is where our sense of taste comes from, it is actually our tongues.

To test her sense of taste, we tasted two different substances - salt and sugar.
We chose these two foods because after testing them using our other senses, we discovered that neither food had a smell, they look exactly the same, they made the same sound when we shook them in the bag, and they felt the same when we rubbed them between her fingers. Only way to tell them apart was to taste them!

During our experiment each kindergartener was given to popsicle sticks labeled A and B. We then dipped our popsicle sticks in water and then dipped one in each of our bags so that the sugar and salt would stick.

As a group, we decided we would taste stick A first. After deciding on their own what they thought the first taste was, they then tasted stick B.

After tasting both flavors, the kindergartners voted on what they thought stick A and B were. I think the kindergarteners really understood how our sense of taste can help us to identify things that our other senses can't help us with. It also provided some extremely funny faces when they tasted salt expecting it to be sweet like candy!
