Harlan Earth Week

HARLAN EARTH WEEK
Sponsored by the Harlan Green Team
April 22 – April 26

Monday – Environmental Awareness Day
Students should wear “Earth” colors to school.  Green – grass, Blue – sky, Brown – dirt, clothes with flowers, etc. Students will hear messages about ways to improve the environment.

Tuesday – Pencil Sale for Friends of Rouge River
Green “Paw” pencils will be sold at lunch for $.50 to raise money for Friends of Rouge River.  Students will learn about the environmental issues for this local river and how the organization helps our community.
Friends of the Rouge is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization created in 1986 to raise awareness about the need to clean up the Rouge River in southeast Michigan. Mission Statement: To promote restoration and stewardship of the Rouge River ecosystem through education, citizen involvement and other collaborative efforts, for the purpose of improving the quality of life for the people, plants, and animals of the watershed.
Wednesday – Endangered Animal Day
Harlan students will vote for an endangered animal they want our school to help by putting a donation (any amount) in a jar for the endangered animal of their choice. The animal with the most money will be the animal selected for our donation to the World Wildlife Fund. Animal choices are: Blue Whale, Polar Bear, Tiger, Giant Panda and Mountain Gorilla. The winning animal will be announced at the end of the day.  Students will learn about why these animals are endangered.
Thursday – Trashless Lunch Education Day
Bring a Trashless Lunch! Students will learn more about why we have Trashless Lunch on Thursdays and the Green Team will report on how we’re doing.
Friday – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Refuse Day
Students will learn more about the 3 R’s and be introduced to a new R – Refuse.  An example of “refuse” is to ask for a regular glass instead of a plastic “kiddie” cup at a restaurant. Another example is to pledge to use a reuseable water container instead of a water bottle that will end up in a landfill.  Students are asked to wear Green on this day.
