Pan Balance

In math workshop today we were introduced to a new math tool - a pan balance!

In small groups we chose two different manipulatives to place on either side of the balance. Before putting them in each student had an opportunity to guess which one they thought would be heavier. We discussed how the heavier side would go down, while the lighter side would go up. 

Some of the things that we used included small bears, pennies, rainbow links and buttons!  We then drew what was heavier and what was lighter!
