Addition

Before we went on break, Room 100 was working hard on learning all about addition! This included finding different combinations that add up to 5, learning what the plus and equal signs mean and using manipulatives to answer beginning addition problems!

Here we are playing some of our favorite addition games:

Shake Rattle and Roll is a great game where we have five circles that are red on one side and yellow on the other in our cup. When we shake the cup and spill the circles, we use our recording sheet to color how many circles were yellow and how many were red. We then turn that information into a number sentence. For example, if we rolled three red circles and two yellow circles, we would turn that into 3+2 = 5 circles altogether!

Our favorite part was listening to the song Shake Rattle and Roll while we played! Dancing always makes math more fun!

We also played games called Ducks in a Pond and Gingerbreadmen in a Jar! Here we used duck and gingerbread cookie manipulatives to place different amounts either in the pond or on the grass for ducks, and in a jar or on a plate for gingerbread cookies!

We practiced creating different combinations of 5 with our manipulatives. We would then take the pictures that we created, for example 2 cookies in the jar and 3 on the plate and turned that information into number sentences.

When we come back from break, we will review this and begin to talk about different combinations of 10!
