The Idita-Read!
As you may know, our class is participating in a reading competition for March is Reading Month! This year our theme is dog sledding and the Iditarod race! Hopefully each family was able to see the display outside our classroom (across form the elevator) which depicts the race.
Each student has their picture and their own sled. As they read books and complete the mini book report, they receieve a dog, or "musher," added to their sled. The more dogs they have, the faster their sled goes!
We have been racing for 2 weeks now, and will conclude our race on April 8th with a pizza party prize for the student or students with the most dogs! Their will also be a second and third place prize.
If you need more book reports to fill out, please let me know. Remember, guided reading books do not count for the race. Also, your child has to participate in the reading of the book, not just have it read to them. When filling out the reports, please help your child with capital letters and periods, as well as stretching the words out.
Many students have already begun, earning several dogs each! Currently, Kyle is in the lead! On your marks...Get set...MUSH!

Winter Exhibitions
Wow! Exhibitions this week have been fantastic! I am so proud of all the hard work that each student put into their presentation! Each family should have received their Spring Exhibition packet in their child's folder by last Friday. This packet included the following:
-The filled out learning plan for your child with the goals that we set for them. The plan should have been signed by both myself and a member of the family that shows agreement and understanding of the goals.
-The list of Milestone due dates. Please try to have each portion of your child's exhibition completed by each milestone. Doing manageable portions of the project at a time will help your child be better prepared and keep every one's stress level down. Please remember, 1st graders can not process and recall large chunks of information as easily as adults, and they are the ones presenting the information.
-Handouts for the list of resources, new facts learned and a "How-to" guide to function machines were also included. If these papers are misplaced, please let me know so that I can replace them. The facts and resources can also be written on a separate piece of paper if needed.
Please let me know you have any questions or did not receive your exhibition packet. Thank you in advance for the continued support from home. Please be on the lookout for pictures that are coming soon!

Shining Light
Our Shining Light this week is Kameron! I am so proud of his conflict resolution recently! Each time a problem happened, I could hear Kameron ask the other child how they could "work this out," as well as helping to encourage our friends make the best choices. Keep up the great work, DJ Kam Kam!

Malik's Special Day
Over the break, we had a few of our friends turn another year older. On Monday, we helped Malik celebrate his 7th birthday! We had a great time and enjoyed the delicious treats Malik's mom brought!
Malik and his proud big sister Nia.
Malik's friends during the celebration! He even got a great big group birthday hug!
Happy birthday to Malik and his twin brother Mekhi!
