Teachers Go Bananas!

Today was the Annual Teachers Go Bananas Day at Harlan!  This is a special day when all of the teachers dress up as one of their favorite book characters.  When a silly song (BananaPhone by Raffi) plays over the PA, the teachers all go bananas, grab their book and run into another classroom to read to that class!

Here is the First Grade Team ready to Go Bananas!

Miss Thane is"Rainbow Fish" from The Rainbow Fish, Mr. Kefgen is "Pete the Cat" from Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons and Mrs. Cibor is a "Truffula Tree" from The Lorax!

Our class was visited by Mr. Price when he went bananas!  He came into our room as
"The Peddler" from Caps for Sale!

Some of our favorite characters even joined us in first grade today!

We had an American Girl Doll...

A Storm Trooper...

A Drama Queen...

Harry Potter...

Junie B. Jones...

Fancy Nancy...

and a double dose of Pinkalicious!

Happy Teachers Go Bananas Day!

SCHOOL HEALTH SERVICES

BIRMINGHAM PUBLIC SCHOOLS

OAKLAND COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH
COMMUNICABLE DISEASE CONTROL

Strep Throat has been reported in your student’s grade level at Harlan School.  The invasion period may be 1-3 days after exposure.

Observe your child for symptoms during this period.  Keep your child home if he/she shows signs of illness.  Attacks of this disease may vary in severity, some may be very mild.  Either severe or mild cases may have serious complications.  It is usually from mild attacks that the disease spreads because the parent does not recognize the disease and fails to call the physician.

Cases of Scarlet Fever, Diphtheria, Smallpox, Tuberculosis, Infectious Hepatitis, Typhoid Fever and Salmonella (intestinal infections) should be reported to the Health Department immediately.  Children who have recovered from these diseases, except Scarlet Fever, must have clearance through the Department of Health in order to return to school.

1st Grade News

Hi First Grade Families!

I wanted to let you know that there is a mistake on this week’s newsletter! The words for this week should be: DO, RAN and WHITE. Sorry for the confusion!

Also, we will be completing our end-of-unit assessment in writing tomorrow. The students will plan, write and revise an informational piece in 45 minutes. They are allowed to start thinking about their topic the night before, so I’ll be asking them to spend a little time tonight thinking about an idea for their piece.

Thanks for sending in the completed leprechaun projects! They are adorable! If your child didn’t bring it in yet, they are welcome to do so anytime this week.

Thank you and enjoy this amazing weather!

March is Reading Month

Get Caught Reading

Hello Harlan Families!

Reading is Groovy!  We are so excited about March is Reading Month and trying to find many different ways to get our students excited about reading.  We would love your help!  We would like you to “catch” your child reading.  Really, we would like it to be a surprise.  Please be on the lookout for your child to be reading at home and snap a picture.  Then, send the picture to the email below and we will display their “Groovy Reader” photo on a board in the lobby.  We would love to fill a wall! If you don’t have a way to send a picture, let us know and we will be glad to help.

Please send pictures to Harlan Reading Specialist, Lynne Keller:

Happy Reading!
