The first grade teachers are excited to introduce another area of focus to our day this spring! After studying our most recent writing samples, we feel that we would like to increase the amount of conventional (i.e. correct!) spelling our students do within their daily work. While our writing work often focuses on “spelling the best we can and moving on” as an attempt to avoid disrupting the writing process, we’d like to encourage our young writers to begin to focus a little more on spelling words correctly as we prepare for second grade.
Each week from now until June, we will have a “spelling list” comprised of 5 word wall words and one word family. Each Friday, students will participate in a “Spelling Challenge” in which they will attempt to spell the five word wall words correctly, as well as correctly spell 5 surprise words from the given word family. For example, if the family of the week is “-ot,” children might be asked to spell “dot, spot, got, shot and hot” on their spelling challenge.
We will be practicing our words and word families at school in a variety of ways and also encourage your child to practice the words at home. We are attaching a packet full of creative ways to practice the words; we hope your child can enjoy this learning process!
Each week, the words and word family will be outlined in the newsletter. Please let us know if you have any questions! We are confident that this extra emphasis on conventional spelling will help our young ones blossom as writers!
Thanks for your continued support!
