Winter Clothing
This is a gentle reminder to send your children to school with winter weather clothing. Since the weather has been so cold lately, please remember to send your child to school with hats, gloves, mittens, scarves, snow pants and boots.
Even though it may be too cold for us to go out for recess, there have been days where we are outside for dismissal, either in the walker line, car pick up line or walking outside to get on our bus to go home. Please make sure that your child brings the appropriate weather clothing so that they can stay as warm as possible.
Hopefully it warms up enough that we get to go outside for recess soon!
Harlan's Super Science Day!
This Thursday, all of the students at Harlan will be able to participate in our first Super Science Day! In the morning, the kindergartners will get to explore 10 different hands-on science investigations. In the afternoon, all of the students at Harlan will come together for an assembly where we further our knowledge about science and the scientific method!
This will be a very exciting day!
Gym Shoes and Library Books
This is a gentle reminder that tomorrow will be a D day, and we will be visiting both the gym and media center.
Please remember to return all library books to school tomorrow, Wednesday, January 29. Also, please remember to send your child with a pair of gym shoes that they can change into.
Calling All Volunteers!
Over the next week, our class will be creating life-size portraits of ourselves! This involves having each student lie down on a piece of paper and an adult to draw the outline of their bodies. Afterwards, the children will have the opportunity to paint the pictures to look just like themselves!
As this will be a big undertaking, we can use all the help that we can get in Room 100! I am asking for any and all volunteers who would be willing to help with this project. As this will take approximately one week to complete, if you are available on any school day to help outline or paint with the children, it would be greatly appreciated!
Please let me know if you're available so that I can begin to schedule this project. Thank you in advance for your help!

Poetry Books coming home today
Since we have not been able to do poetry for the last few weeks, poetry books will be coming home today.
Today's poem is called This Is the Way We Wash Our Face. Please read this and a few other poems of your choice this week. On Friday, we will be learning another poem to add to our books. Please return the poetry book this Friday.
Thank you in advance!

January Pride Posts
The January pride posts were sent home in your child's blue homework folder today. Our theme this month will be snowflakes!
Since each snowflake is special and one-of-a-kind, this pride post's sentence starter is " (child's name) is unique because…"
Also, since the snowflake shape is so decorated on the front, please write your message on the back, or plain white side. That way we will be able to clearly read the message!
Please complete the snowflake and return to school. Thank you in advance!

Media Center Books
Tomorrow we will be visiting the media center. Please remember to send all media center books to school tomorrow so that they can be returned. If you are not able to find your book, please let me know.
Class Shirts
Please have your kindergartener wear their class t shirts to school tomorrow, Friday, January 10. We will be having our picture taken as a grade level for the yearbook. If you are not able to send your child in their shirt, any shirt of a similar color will be OK as well.
Thank you in advance!
Thank you in advance!
In need of empty boxes
Please see the below reminder. Due to the snow days, we will be working on our economics unit beginning next week. If possible, we could still use empty containers for our grocery store. Thank you to all of the families who have already sent in supplies.
This is reposted from a few weeks ago.
Dear Parents,
Our next social studies unit will set the foundation for helping children learn about making economic decisions. Students will learn the meaning of producer, consumer, goods and services. They will have the opportunity to determine what their wants and needs are and will understand the need for money and how people can earn money. We are going to to turn our classroom into our very own community - Kindertown! We want to set up a restaurant in our classroom where we are reading menus, ordering food (writing orders), and paying our bills (using money). When you are out to eat, if you could please pick up a carry out menu for our "restaurant" that would be great! To further enhance our understanding of consumer/producer and goods/services, we are going to set up a grocery store as well! We need your help - please send in empty boxes of all different kinds of food items for our grocery store. We will be writing grocery lists and using money to pay for our groceries. Please start sending these things to school on January 6th (our first day back from vacation). We will also have a pet shop, car wash, bakery, nail salon and more in our community! We would like to have everything up and running by Monday, January 13, 2014.
Thank you so much for all your help and support!

Gingerbread Man on the Run!
We love to cook in Room 100! Here we are as we mix our very own gingerbread man!
First we added a gingerbread mix into our bowl…
Then we added a few eggs…
One of our eggs exploded when we tapped it a little too hard!
We then added some flour…
And water…
After everyone had a turn to stir our mixture, we poured it into our gingerbread man pan...
And placed him in the oven to bake!
We were so excited to eat him as dessert after lunch! But when we returned to the kitchen to take him out of the oven, we found a surprise waiting for us! The gingerbread man was not there! He did, however, leave a series of clues as to where we could find him.
Here we are following the clues around the school as we tried to catch our gingerbread man! We went to the music room, lunchroom, gym, media center and even the office! Mrs. McCormick, our school secretary, said that she saw him running in the hallway and tried to catch him. Unfortunately, all she was able to grab was his toe, which she popped in her mouth right in front of the kids!
We chased the gingerbread man through the whole school, but we never did catch him! He did leave us smaller gingerbread men to decorate as a present for trying so hard to find him!
If you ever see him, please let us know!
Addition
Before we went on break, Room 100 was working hard on learning all about addition! This included finding different combinations that add up to 5, learning what the plus and equal signs mean and using manipulatives to answer beginning addition problems!
Here we are playing some of our favorite addition games:
Shake Rattle and Roll is a great game where we have five circles that are red on one side and yellow on the other in our cup. When we shake the cup and spill the circles, we use our recording sheet to color how many circles were yellow and how many were red. We then turn that information into a number sentence. For example, if we rolled three red circles and two yellow circles, we would turn that into 3+2 = 5 circles altogether!
Our favorite part was listening to the song Shake Rattle and Roll while we played! Dancing always makes math more fun!
We also played games called Ducks in a Pond and Gingerbreadmen in a Jar! Here we used duck and gingerbread cookie manipulatives to place different amounts either in the pond or on the grass for ducks, and in a jar or on a plate for gingerbread cookies!
We practiced creating different combinations of 5 with our manipulatives. We would then take the pictures that we created, for example 2 cookies in the jar and 3 on the plate and turned that information into number sentences.
When we come back from break, we will review this and begin to talk about different combinations of 10!
Welcome back...almost!
I hope everyone has had a wonderful winter vacation! Thank you so much to my friends who emailed me and let me know what they have been up to for the last few weeks. It was so wonderful to hear from you!
Please enjoy your last weekend before we return to school on Monday. I have missed everybody so much, and can't wait to see you all when we go back to school!
See you soon, Harlan Huskies!
