More Strep Throat...

This seems to be going around.  Here is an information sheet about strep throat from the office:

SCHOOL HEALTH SERVICES

BIRMINGHAM PUBLIC SCHOOLS

OAKLAND COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH
COMMUNICABLE DISEASE CONTROL

Strep Throat has been reported in your student’s grade level at Harlan School.  The invasion period may be 1-3 days after exposure.

Observe your child for symptoms during this period.  Keep your child home if he/she shows signs of illness.  Attacks of this disease may vary in severity, some may be very mild.  Either severe or mild cases may have serious complications.  It is usually from mild attacks that the disease spreads because the parent does not recognize the disease and fails to call the physician.

Cases of Scarlet Fever, Diphtheria, Smallpox, Tuberculosis, Infectious Hepatitis, Typhoid Fever and Salmonella (intestinal infections) should be reported to the Health Department immediately.  Children who have recovered from these diseases, except Scarlet Fever, must have clearance through the Department of Health in order to return to school.

Little Green Thumbs

For the month of December, we will be taking care of Amaryllis flowers, and measuring them each week!  Both the boys and the girls have a flower to care for, including watering and turning the plant to make sure that it gets sun light all around.  Here we are discovering the plants before planting them.  We talked about what a bulb is, what roots are, and what plants need to grow.

The kindergarteners also had to come up with a name for their plant.  They were told to agree on a name that everyone was happy with.  The boys chose to have a discussion where everyone shared their favorite name before choosing to name the plant Henry Squinky!

The girls chose a voting system by putting their hands in the middle.  They decided on Barbie Pretty Disney Princess Petals.  With a first, middle and last name, everyone was able to contribute!

Stay tuned to see how much our plants grow each week as we measure them with different objects!

Lost & Found

We seem to have a few dishes and utensils left over from out Family Feast a few weeks ago.  These have been washed and are ready to be taken home.  We have a white glass plate, a black plastic bowl (even thought it looks silver in the picture) and a large black plastic serving spoon.  If these belong to you, please let me know.  Thank you!

Mystery Readers

Over the past few weeks, we have welcomed several Mystery Readers into our classroom to share a favorite story with us!

A great big THANK YOU goes out to Rachel's Mom and Dad, as well as Kyle's Mom.  We loved the stories you picked for us!

Strep Throat

I wanted to let all of the families know that there are several cases of strep throat in our school at this time.  This includes 1 case of strep throat in our grade level.  Please be on the lookout for this with your child.  If you have any questions, please let me know.  Thank you!

Field Trip Reminder

This is a gentle reminder that we will be going on a field trip tomorrow, Friday, Dec. 7, to see the play "If You Give a Mouse a Cookie..." at the Millennium Theatre.  We will leave at the beginning of school and be back at lunch time.  If you are joining us as a chaperone, I will provide maps for you in the morning to follow us to the theatre because of our limited bus space.

We are very excited to see the play! We have already read several of Laura Numeroff's books including "If You Give a Mouse a Cookie," "If You Give a Moose a Muffin" and "If You Give a Dog a Donut,' and can't wait to see the characters come to life on stage!
