Shining Light

This week, our class honored Christian as our Shining Light!  Christian has really been working hard on follow directions and completing his activities.  On Friday, he was a great kindergarten leader both in and out of the classroom.  Excellent work, Christian!

No School on Monday, January 23

This is a gentle reminder that there is NO SCHOOL this Monday, January 23.  This is a records day for teachers.  See everyone on Tuesday!

Shining Light

For our first week back, our class chose to honor Amari as our Shining Light.  Amari has really been working on following directions.  On Friday, he did a great job of following directions and completing his activities without having to be reminded!  Awesome job, Amari!

NO SCHOOL on Monday, January 16 (MLK Day)

I know that we just returned from a long break, but there will be NO SCHOOL on Monday, January 16.  Our school will be observing Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

We will be learning more about Dr. King next week in social studies!  Enjoy the three day weekend!  See you all on Tuesday!

Weekend Journal Correction

I just noticed that I made a mistake in the previous post about writing with your child.  What I meant to say was writing the words like  "Christmas" with a "k" is fine at this point, and that you should not be worried or insist they use the correct spelling for large words.  Most of us are still working on adding ending sounds consistently, while others are adding middle sounds.  I hope this clarification helps.  Have fun writing with you children! 

Weekend Journal

This is a gentle reminder that your child's Weekend Journal will be coming home this weekend.  The question for the kindergarteners to answer is "What do you like to do outside?"

Please remember that when you are helping your child write, it is important to guide them into hearing the sounds in words rather than spelling things for them.  At this stage in their developing writing, they do not need to be spelling everything correctly, but sounding words out to hear the different parts.

Also, we have not yet gone over phonetic rules such as what ch/sh/wh/ph/th (digraphs), silent "e," or the difference between hard and soft c/g.  These are things that will happen during the second half of kindergarten and into 1st grade.  Do not worry about making sure that your child spells "Christmas" with a "k" at this point of the year.  The sound of a "k" is at the beginning of the word, and they are using the strategies they have been taught to sound out the word on their own.

My best suggestion is to sit with your child as they write, and guide them when needed without doing it for them.  Oh, one more thing - don't forget the spaces and periods :)
