Top It

This week, we learned a new math game!  We have been practicing recognizing which numbers are higher or lower in a set, and to help us, we learned how to play Top It!  This card game is played in pairs, which each player getting their own set of cards.  One at a time, the players each take their top card and place it face up in the middle.  The player with the highest number wins the hand.  This game is also a great way to reinforce number identification up to 20!  Here we are having a blast playing Top It!

Help us buy a cow!

In the spirit of giving this holiday season, our class will be conducting a fundraiser beginning next Monday, December 12 - Friday, December 16.  From 7:45 - 8:45am, we will be selling bagels, cream cheese and juice in the front hall across from the gym doors.  As this is Exhibition Week, and a lot of parents will also be in the building, we hope this will be a HUGE success.

What will we do with the money raised?  We are buying a cow!  Yes, a real cow!  And as much as we would love to add a cow to the ever growing zoo in our classroom, we will not be keeping it.  All money will be donated in our classroom's name to an incredible non-profit organization called Oxfam America.  This group helps support the needs of families around the world by offering sustainable gifts of plants and animals!  As a class, we discussed ways that having plants and livestock can change the lives of those who do not have nearly as much as we do.  The kindergarteners have their little hearts set on purchasing a cow, and sending it to a family in Africa.  This cow will not only provide much needed milk and nutrition, but also a source of income as the family will be able to sell the milk or milk products they make.

How can your family help?  Please join us next week for the fundraiser, and purchase freshly baked bagels, cream cheese and juice.  Let's make this event a success!

Can Drive

Recently, a flyer was sent home in your child's folder which explained that UPA is holding a Can Food Drive this year.  Outside our classroom, we have a box for our class to donate canned and nonperishable food to go towards families in need.  I wanted to give a great BIG thank you to Anthony's family for already donating and starting our class in the right direction.  If anyone else has already donated without me knowing, our class thanks you as well.  In addition to teaching the kindergarteners how important it is to help those in need, the classroom with the most items donated will be given the UPA Generosity Award!  Ms. Ritter has also informed us that the this class will also win a special treat!

If you are able, please consider donating canned and/or nonperishable food items to our Can Drive.  The box is right outside our classroom door!  Thank you in advance!

Mystery Reader

On Wednesday, Amari's grandmother surprised our class as the Village Mystery Reader!  Ms. Willis chose to read The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keates.  With snow coming for the first time this week, it was the perfect introduction to the winter fun we will be having soon!  Thank you again, Ms. Willis!

Shining Light

On Friday, our class chose Anthony as our Shining Light!  We were so impressed with his incredible day,  we wanted him to know how much his light was shining today!  Anthony spent the day working hard, completing all of his tasks, use polite words, sharing and helping his friends and following all the directions given to him!  Wow!  Congratulations, Anthony, on such an AMAZING day!

Scholastic Book Fair

Next Thursday, December 8, our school will hold our annual Book Fair!  After school, our gym will be turned into a book store, with tons of great children's books for purchase!  I plan on going to check out new books for our classroom, and I hope to see all the kindergarteners there as well.  On Friday, we watched a short video in our Village meeting that showed us what the Book Fair will be about!  We are so excited...see you there!
