Shining Light

Each Friday, all of the classes in Lighthouse Village come together to honor one student from each class as it's Shining Light.  This means that the student made excellent choices that week and was a leader in our classroom.  Here are the Shining Lights from our classroom from the first month of school!

Nia was chosen because she has been a leader both in and out of the classroom.

Donovan was chosen because he has done an amazing job of helping his friends stay on task.

KB was chosen because he has been making excellent choices during center time.

Ethan was chosen because of his positive attitude and for following directions all week long.

Congratulations, Shining Lights!  Keep up the great work!

Spin-a-Number

In math, we have been continuing to work on our counting and number identification.  Here we are playing a game we made using a pencil and a paper clip.  The children took turns holding the pencil in the middle of the spinner and spinning the paper clip.  They then had to use their game pieces and move that number of squares.  The children did an amazing job of working together, as well as taking turns!

Apple Taste Test

After learning all about the letter "A", we decided to do an apple taste test!  Here we are tasting red, yellow and green apples.  After we had each tasted some of the apples, we described what we thought.

"Yellow apples taste kind of sour!"  - Phillip
"This (red apple) is crunchy." - Karima
"Green tastes the best because green is my favorite color!" - Amari
"The red ones are sweet like candy." - Rachel

Caterpillar Cookies

After learning all about the letter "C", we read the book The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle.  We then made our own "caterpillar cookies"!  We used green candies for the different parts of the caterpillar's body, and a red candy for it's head - just like in the book!  We even made sure to put our caterpillars i the shape of a '"c"!

Learning is delicious!

A little one-to-one fun!

In math, we have been practicing representing numbers using objects.  Here we are using a 10-box grid to show different numbers 1-10 using candy corn!  We chose candy corn because it reinforced our study of the letter "c".  It also provided a tasty (and sometimes food) snack after a long day of learning!

Working with the 1st Graders!

For the past several weeks, our class has been hard at work in social studies.  As you may know, for both social studies and science, our class combines with Ms. Demsky's 1st graders next door!  When we are learning about social studies, I lead the lessons while Ms. Demsky assists me.  Here are some of the kindergarteners working with a first grade buddy to complete a time line of their day.  We have so much fun working with our "older" friends!  In a few weeks, we will be switching over to science, with Ms. Demsky taking the lead, and me assisting her!
