Gumbo!
I just created a YouTube channel so that we can begin including more videos on our blog! Here is the second video (the first being the March is Reading Month Flash Mob) of our class!
Back in February, our school celebrated African American History Month, with each grade level learning about a different aspect of African American culture. The kindergarteners learned about cuisine! Through our unit, we discovered that gumbo is a dish that includes many ingredients and cooking techniques brought over from Africa! Here is a "music video" we recorded and made to teach others about gumbo! I hope you enjoy it as much as we do!

Spring Exhibition Schedule
Next week our class will be presenting their Spring Exhibitions. The scheduled times are below. Please remember that a family member needs to be present for your child's presentation and the following learning team meeting. At the meeting, we will be discussing your child's progress and looking at work samples. If you have any questions, please let me know. I am really looking forward to seeing all the kindergartener's hard work next week!

Night of the Arts
The Night of the Arts was a HUGE success! Last Wednesday, the whole school came together to celebrate the many forms of art in our building - visual art, music and poetry! It was so much fun to see and hear how talented our students are! In addition to seeing a piece of artwork from every student in the building, the children were able to create book marks, participate in a poetry slam, buy student-made jewelry and listen to live music!
Here is our class' showing at the art show! They are all so talented!
The 3rd graders played a mini recorder concert, while the 5th graders showed off their guitar skills!
Here are Christian, Donovan, Nia, Rachel and their families enjoying the festivities!
At the end of the night, there was even a raffle where Nia and Rachel won prizes!
I hope everyone enjoyed the Night of the Arts as much as I did!
Base 10 Blocks
We have been working really hard in math! One of the skills we have been practicing is using base 10 blocks. These are special manipulatives that help us learn how to skip count and count different groups of numbers. So far, we have been learning about the cubes, which are small blocks counted as "1", and longs, which are 10 cubes stuck together and counted as "10". Here are some of the kindergarteners building larger numbers using the base 10 blocks!

Compound Words
In phonics this week, we learned about compound words! We learned that a compound word is when two words are glued together to make a new word! We had so much fun with this concept. Here are some of the kindergarteners putting together puzzles to make compound words!
Happy Mother's Day!
As we ended our last social studies unit on recycling, the kindergarteners decided to make a special gift for our mothers, aunts and grandmothers! Thank you to all of the special mothers in our lives for helping us to "bloom" into who we are! Here are a few pictures of the children doing some gardening and recycling.
HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!
I would also like to say a huge THANK YOU to my own mother who continues to amaze me everyday. Thank you, Mom!

Night of the Arts
Join us on Wednesday, May 16 from 5 -7pm!
During the Night of the Arts, each of the kindergarteners will have a piece of their original art on display! This is wonderful opportunity for families and friends to see all the hard work the children have been doing this year with Ms. Seikaly in art class! I hope to see everyone there!

Rainbow Weaving
Here is our class with our finished rainbow weaving! We practiced weaving as a way of strengthening our fine motor skills! This was very difficult at first, but after some practice, we all started to get the hang of it. Check out our finished products!
Spring Concert
Last week, the kindergarteners did an amazing job in their first school concert! They sang, they danced, some of them even played instruments! I think my favorite part was their hip hop cover of The Itsy Bitsy Spider, complete with some break dancing! What a wonderful job the children and Ms. Ritter did!
Here the kindergarteners are as they performed in the concert. Donovan was chosen to play an instrument during the performance! He can be seen standing next to Ms. Ritter
I am so proud of each one of you! You are all super stars and born to be on stage!
