MLK Respect Circle Project

First grade dedicated this week's Respect Circle to Martin Luther King, Jr.  In addition to learning about Dr. King and his message, we listened to a song by Jack Johnson called "Two Hands."  Below are the lyrics, as well as a link to the song on YouTube for you to hear it.  We traced our hands and created a display for our hallway using our own two hands and the lyrics to honor Dr. King.

I can change the world
With my own two hands
Make it a better place
With my own two hands
Make it a kinder place
With my own two hands
With my own
With my own two hands
I can make peace on earth
With my own two hands
I can clean up the earth
With my own two hands
I can reach out to you
With my own two hands
With my own
With my own two hands
I'm going to make it a brighter place
With my own two hands
I'm going to make it a safer place
With my own two hands
I'm going to help the human race
With my own two hands
With my own
With my own two hands
I can hold you
With my own two hands
I can comfort you
With my own two hands
But you've got to use
Use your own two hands
Use your own
Use your own two hands
With our own
With our own two hands
With my own
With my own two hands

NO SCHOOL, Monday, January 18

This is a gentle reminder that there will be NO SCHOOL on Monday, January 18 as we celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.  School will resume on Tuesday, January 19.

The first graders and I have been talking a lot about Dr. King and the ideas that he spoke about including fairness, equality, accepting differences and using kindness.  As a class, we talked about using the extra time we have away from school this Monday to do one act of kindness to honor Dr King.

Friendly Classmates...

For our morning meeting activity today, we created a poster to hang on our wall!  We titled it "A Friendly Classmate..."  The children had so much fun brainstorming ideas on how to complete that sentence.  We decided to organize our thoughts into three groups.  I think the poster came out fantastic and was completely generated through their ideas.  Great job, Room 112!

Balloons

I know that this may be an odd request, but our math class is in need of 4 helium balloons for this week's lessons.  I know this is last minute, but I was wondering if anyone might be able to donate these balloons and bring them to school tomorrow by 1pm?  If you are going to be out and about and think you could do this, please let me know!

Thanks so much!

Popcorn Day - Tomorrow, Jan. 12

This is a gentle reminder that tomorrow, Tuesday, Jan. 12, will be Popcorn Day.

Each bag of popcorn costs $0.50.

Town Hall Meeting and Jump Rope for Heart

Today, Mr. Price is sending home the donation information for Jump Rope for Heart!  This year, the children will be collecting puppies instead of ducks as they raise money for sick hearts!  Please be on the lookout for the following packet:

Also, Harlan had a Town Hall meeting today where we learned about the organization Disaster Relief at Work (DRAW).  We learned that Harlan will be participating in an all-school service leaning project.  The first graders can help by collecting things like zip lock bags, garbage bags and dust masks to be placed in a "Valuables Bucket" to help with disaster relief around the country.  Details can be found on the following sheet that was sent home today.

Please let me know if you have any questions about either of these programs.

Januaray Pride Posts

Please be on the look out for the January Pride Posts that came home in your children's yellow folders today.  This month our theme is snowflakes, which turned out to be perfect for today!

Please let me know if you have any questions.

All About Adjectives!

Today we learned about adjectives! We discussed how these are words in sentences that describe another word in the sentence.

Some of the things that we found out adjectives can describe are colors, size, temperature, shapes, how many, texture and feelings.

We even played a little game where every time someone said the word "adjective," everyone would respond with "describing!"

January RazKids Challenge

Congratulations to the students who met the 300 minute December RazKids Challenge!  If your child logged in 300 or more minutes during the month of December, you should have received an email confirming this and an invitation to a special lunch in our classroom with me!  Please remember to send your child with their lunch to school.  After lunch, they will be joining their classmates at recess!

We will continue using the 300 minute goal for our January RazKids Challenge.  This will last from January 4 through February 4.  Good luck!
