Parent Workshop Surveys

This is a gentle reminder to please return the completed surveys on Monday.  I wanted to thank you all once again for coming to our event.  I am looking forward to our next workshop on April 2!

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Compass Learning and RazKids

Yesterday a letter was sent home informing parents of two great programs that can be used at home for extra practice - Compass Learning and Razkids.

If for some reason the link from our blog does not take you to our RazKids home page, you can search by my user name - mrkefgen100.  When you have found our class login page, click on your child's first name.  Passwords are located on the letter that was sent home yesterday.

On this site, I have assigned each student a level based on their scores from our most recent reading assessment.  By clicking "Your Assignment," your child will have access to their own e library of books, both fiction and nonfiction, all leveled for their individual progress.  Under each title, there are three icons - a book with an ear, which allows the children to listen to the book being read to them; a book with an eye, where they can read the book on their own; and a question mark, where they can take a comprehension quiz.  I think the best part of the quizzes is that the children can click on both the questions and the answer choices and have them read to them!  The more the children read, the more stars they earn!

Compass Learning is an amazing tool that is directly linked to our NWEA assessments that all of the Harlan students take at least 2 times per year.  In kindergarten, we take both the math and reading assessments.  Compass Learning takes the assessment results and customizes a "learning path" for each student based on their NWEA scores.  This site offers activities for both math and reading that are excellent practice while at home.  Harlan is encouraging all students to use this site as often as possible so that each child can continue to enhance their learning.

When using Compass Learning, please make sure that you have typed "harlan" in the school category.  Your child's user name and passwords are located on the letter that was sent home yesterday.

Please let me know if you have any questions.  Good luck and have fun!

Grapefruit Day!

Last week, we enjoyed grapefruit for our Fresh Fruit Friday! This was a first for many of the kindergarteners, and the sour faces were the best part!

Thank you so much to Lynne P. for sending in this delicious treat!

If you are interested in participating in our Fresh Fruit Friday program, please use the SignUp Genius link on the left side of our blog.

Flying into Research!

This week, the kindergartners began our first research project! We are currently learning about birds of prey. For this project, the students used the database PebbleGo in the computer lab to learn about five different birds of prey – eagles, falcons, vultures, hawks and owls.

After learning about all of the different birds of prey, our class voted on which one we would like to create a book about. The eagle one by an overwhelming majority!

After deciding on our bird, the kindergartners created a list of facts that they had learned from PebbleGo. We then organized the information that they learned into four categories-what eagles eat, look like, where they live and fun facts.

Our next step will be for each kindergartner to choose one fact and create a page to be part of a class research book. When all three kindergarten class books are complete, we will trade books to learn about the other birds of prey that we did not choose!

As a surprise for the kindergartners, we will have the Howell Nature Center bring real birds of prey for the kids to see! This is a surprise, so please don't let them know!  :)

Jump Rope for Heart

Recently, our school was treated to an assembly regarding Jump Rope for Heart. We learned that by collecting donations, we can help those who have sick hearts. One of the programs that our PE teacher, Mr. Price, has put together this year are the Heart Hero Ducks.

If your child has began collecting donations, please fill out the form for your child to earn their first duck - quacky!

Mr. Price informed the teachers that all forms should be handed in by the teachers on days their class visits the gym. Tomorrow, I will be taking all forms that have been sent in so far to Mr. Price.

Thank you so much to those who already donated!
