Awards Ceremony Reminder

This is a gentle reminder that Lighthouse Village will be holding its Annual Awards Ceremony, tomorrow, Tuesday, June 14.  It will begin at 9am and take place in the gym.

At the ceremony, the children will be honored for their achievements this year.  Our class will each receive an award for their strongest subject or their most improved area, while our APMT teachers will also be giving awards in their subjects.  The children will also be performing a song for the audience.

Following the ceremony, we will return to our class for an end-of-the-year party!  All friends and families are welcome to attend. Treats will be provided, but if you would like to donate snacks, please bring them in on Tuesday!  Thank you in advance!

I hope to see everyone there!

Lighthouse Awards Ceremony

The Lighthouse Awards Ceremony will be held on Tuesday, June 14.  It will take place in the gym and begin at 9am.  At the ceremony, your child will be awarded for the individual progress that they have made this year in 1st grade!  The children will also be performing their last song as part of Lighthouse Village.

Following the ceremony, we will return to our classroom and conclude our morning with an end-of-the-year class party!  If you would like to donate food for our celebration, please bring the items in next week!  All family members and friends are welcome to attend!

I hope to see as many families there as possible as I introduce the audience to our newest 2nd graders!

Carnival and Zoo

Please remember that this Friday, June 10, is our annual school carnival!  It will be held outside our building starting at 5pm! This will include games, prizes, food and lots and lots of fun!  I will be there working the cotton candy machine, and I hope to see everyone there to celebrate the end of another great year at UPA!  Please remember to purchase tickets and wrist bands so that you may enjoy everything there is at the carnival!

Also - the zoo field trip money is due on Friday, June 10.  Please remember to send in $6.00.  Thank you to those families who have already paid!

Shining Light

I have 2 Shining Light updates!  The week before Memorial Day, our class honored An'Niyia and Morgan for their amazing behavior and good choices!  I know that both of them are ready for 2nd grade!  Congratulations, Morgan and An'Niyia!

Last week, we again chose two students who showed our class that they are excellent leaders.  Both Emmanuel and Kyndal were observed helping students around them with center activities, "broken" computers and stretching out words during writer's workshop.  I am so proud of the two years Emmanuel and Kyndal have spent in our class!  Great job, Emmanuel and Kyndal!

Charlotte's Web

This week, our class finished our latest read-aloud, Charlotte's Web.  It was the longest book we have read together, at 184 pages!  It took us about a month, reading 1- 2 chapters a day!  The children really enjoyed this story, and it continued our introduction of chapter books with few pictures.   With this book, we also practiced making predictions.  After each event, we would discuss why we think something may have happened, and what we think might happen next.

I think that my favorite part has been hearing the children use some of the new vocabulary words they learned from the book.  This week alone, I heard Kyndal ask if we should be "humble" (we defined this as not showing off), and Keisa greeted me the other morning with a great big smile and "salutations" (Charlotte's favorite way to say hello)!  Our class is terrific, terrific, terrific (as the goose would say)!

We are all excited and ready to move on to our last big read-aloud of the year, Mr. Popper's Penguins, just in time for the movie to come out later this month!
